DYW and the Career Education Standard

Delivering Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) and achieving the Career Education Standard is essential for every educator in Scotland. These frameworks are embedded within Curriculum for Excellence  and are a core responsibility, ensuring learners gain the skills and knowledge needed for a changing world.

Career education is not a separate subject—it is integrated across learning from early years to senior phase. The Career Education Standard (3–18) highlights that all practitioners support young people to understand themselves, explore opportunities, and make informed choices.

DYW strengthens links between learning and the world of work, helping pupils see the relevance of what they study.

Why this matters for Staff

For practitioners, engaging with DYW and the Career Education Standard:

👉Enhances learning and teaching by embedding relevance and context
👉Strengthens interdisciplinary learning opportunities
👉Supports meaningful partnerships with employers, further education, and the wider community
👉Aligns fully with inspection expectations and national priorities
👉Contributes to improved learner outcomes and destinations

Rather than being an additional task, it is a powerful vehicle for delivering high-quality learning experiences.

Why this matters for Learners

For young people, high-quality career education:

👉Raises aspiration and broadens horizons by exposing pupils to pathways they may not otherwise encounter
👉Improves engagement and attainment by connecting classroom learning to real-life applications
👉Develops essential skills such as communication, problem solving, teamwork and adaptability
👉Supports informed decision-making at key transition points
👉Promotes equity and inclusion, ensuring all learners—regardless of background—have access to opportunities and support

Ultimately, it prepares pupils not just for employment, but for life in a dynamic, evolving society.
